Nature of the Work:
Nursery managers and workers are responsible for
the smooth and profitable operation of greenhouses, plant
and garden mail-order centers, roadside stores, local operations
of specialized chain stores, or garden departments of
larger stores.
Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement:
High school graduates can find places for themselves
at smaller nurseries, and they can also find entry-level
employment at bigger companies. The better-paying jobs go to
community college graduates who have majored in
horticulture and business. Classwork in high school and in college
in botany, chemistry, general science, math, and business is
a plus.
Job Outlook:
Wage and salary jobs in agricultural services are
projected to increase much faster than average for all industries.
Numerous job openings will be available because of the need
to replace workers who leave the industry each year. It is
estimated that there will be approximately 116,000 nursery
managers in 2005.
