Nature of the Work:
With the increasing number of women in the
workforce, childcare services has become one of the most talked
about, and fastest growing, industries in the U.S. economy.
For more and more parents, quality child careespecially
for children ages one through fiveis a major concern.
Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement:
Most states do not impose training requirements or
qualifications for family childcare providers other than the
ability to earn the trust of parents. In the case of childcare
centers, however, staffing requirements are imposed primarily by
the states and by insurers. Although requirements vary, in
most cases a minimum age of 18 is required for teachers, and
a 21year minimum age for directors or officers. In some
states, assistants and aides may work at 16, and in several states,
at age 14.
Job Outlook:
Wage and salary jobs in the childcare services industry
are projected to grow 66 percent, ranking it among the
fastest growing industries in the economy. There will be
approximately 1,135,000 wage and salary jobs by 2005. In
addition to openings created by much faster than average
employment growth, an unusually large number of job openings will
result each year from the need to replace experienced workers
who leave the industry. Turnover is very high, reflecting the
low wages and relatively meager benefits. Only 30 percent of
the teaching staff employed in childcare centers were still
employed in the same centers five years later, according to
the National Child Care Staffing Survey. Rapid growth
coupled with high turnover should create excellent employment
opportunities, especially for direct care providers.
