Nature of the Work:
Bicycle mechanics use specialized skills and finely
machined tools to assemble, service, and repair the many
sizes, shapes, and varieties of bicycles that adults and children
use today. The work ranges from taking care of simple tricycles
to helping people maintain complex bicycles with twenty-one or
more speeds, as well as technologically advanced
suspension systems.
Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement:
A high school diploma and the ability to
understand manufacturers' repair manuals are generally required.
Beginners can expect on-the-job training that is similar to
apprenticeships.
Job Outlook:
As a more health-conscious population continues to
incorporate fitness activities into daily life, cycling is likely to
increase in popularity among people in most age groups.
Bicycle shops often expand their sales by stocking skateboards,
snowmobiles, and hi-tech strollers for parents who want to
push their children and jog at the same time. It is estimated
that there will be approximately 20,000 bicycle mechanics
by 2005.
