Nature of the Work:
Athletic instructors and trainers require people to be
capable of motivating themselves and others to achieve
and maintain the highest levels of fitness and skill that
individuals, amateurs, or professionals can accomplish.
Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement:
Athletic trainers who work at high schools and
colleges generally have a four-year degree in the field, whose
course work includes biology, chemistry, mathematics, and
physical education. They also prepare themselves for teaching
certification by taking education classes. Many go on to earn
master's degrees. The National Athletic Trainers' Association and
the American Athletic Trainers Association oversee
certification in the field.
Job Outlook:
It is estimated that by 2005 there will be 355,000
athletic trainers and instructors. Athletic trainers will increasingly
be in demand at health clubs as people continue to
incorporate fitness into their daily lives. The demand for athletic
trainers at high schools, colleges, and universities varies with
population changes and with local budgetary situations. As
more schools recognize the importance of having certified
athletic trainers on hand, more facilities will want to hire them,
but that prospect must be weighed against other demands
on school finances. People who can combine teaching a
basic liberal arts subject with athletic training can often land jobs
at school districts that can only afford half-time positions
in each field. Professional sports teams generally recruit
people with experience. These high-profile opportunities are
very, very difficult to obtain.
